First edition, first printing. 1915 date with no indications of further printings and the publisher identified as "C. P. Putnam's Sons, The Knickerbocker Press". Acclaimed for her book cover designs, Armstrong here displays her considerable botanical expertise. "With five hundred illustrations in black and white, and forty-eight plates in color drawn from nature by the author". Cloth covers with gilt floral design. Faint orange stain to edges. Gullans and Espy 10. Slightest scuffs to covers, with small stains to back panel. A previous owner's bookplate (Elena R. Goodwin), identifies the book as a Christmas gift received in 1916. Pages bright and unmarked. xx, 596pp, 2 pages publisher's advertisements (3 field books of birds, flowers and trees).
