Demy tablebook, [27.75cm/11inches by 30cm/12inches], full pictorial cloth sans dust jacket, unpagnated. Illustrated with colour plates. Front endpapers are a chart of U. S. Naval Strategy, circe 1941 and the rear endpapers are silhouettes of ships of the line and an annotated schematic of the battleship U.S.S. New Mexico. Known in military history circles as author of Ordeal by Fire and other books on the Civil War, Pratt also wrote Fleet Against Japan , The Marines War , Empire and the Sea , and many other volumes of naval history, as well as an early classic on ciphers and cryptography, Secret and Urgent. In the fantasy genre he is remembered for collaborations with L. Sprague DeCamp (the Harold Shea novels and Tales from Gavagans Bar ) and for two significant yet neglected novels, The Well of the Unicorn and The Blue Star. There is a 1997 article in AB Boookman's Weekly on Pratt; google endlessbookshelf.net/fletcherpratt for more on the prolific Pratt.
