Paris: E. F D'Alignan, 1923. First edition. A nice copy of this scarce work. 44 or 55 copies on Velin d'Arches (from a total limitation of 405 copies). With 41 portraits mounted on plates Paper covers. Some darkening and staining. The spine has nicking and chipping to the paper. Binding is slightly weak, and the first gather falls open on the tipped in illustration of Jean Pellerin. Overall though, the work is in very nice condition internally. Some pages uncut. 206 pages. 290 by 195mm (11½ by 7¾ inches). Chana Orloff emigrated with her Jewish family from the Ukraine to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1904 after pogroms. After six years, she moved to Paris, where she enrolled in the Ecole nationale superieure des arts decoratifs. After one year, in 1911, she transferred to the Academie Russe at Montparnasse to begin training in sculpture. There she came into contact with the artists Chaim Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, Jules Pascin and Ossip Zadkine. Subjects include; Georges Braque, Jean Cocteau, André Derain, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, . Quelques assombrissements et taches. Le dos présente des entailles et des écailles sur le papier. La reliure est légèrement affaiblie et la première collection s'ouvre sur l'illustration de Jean Pellerin. Dans l'ensemble, l'ouvrage est en très bon état à l'intérieur. Certaines pages ne sont pas coupées. 206 pages. 290 x 195 mm (11½ x 7¾ pouces). Chana Orloff a émigré avec sa famille juive d'Ukraine vers la Palestine mandataire britannique en 1904 à la suite de pogroms. Après six ans, elle s'installe à Paris, où elle s'inscrit à l'École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. Après un an, en 1911, elle est transférée à l'Académie Russe à Montparnasse pour commencer une formation en sculpture.
