A splendid pictorial anthology of cinema from 1890 to 1977, covering the early cinematic origins and the infancy of film, to the last golden age of American cinema (the American "New Wave"), and the advent of the block-buster film. This volume is profusely illustrated throughout with 52 b/w photomontage plates featuring some of the most famous directors and actors (Georges Méliès, David W. Griffith, Max Linder, Mack Sennett, Fritz Lang, Abel Gance, Serguei Eisenstein, Spencer Tracy, Rita Hayworth, Marcel Carné, Jean Cocteau, Akira Kurosawa, Elia Kazan, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, etc..) as well as scenes of some of the greatest films of all time (Voyage to the Moon, Intolerance, Metropolis, Faust, Nosferatu, Napoleon, Ben Hur, The Birds, Hiroshima My Love, etc..). Lower corners partly rubbed. Minor scuffing on endpapers. Text and captions in French. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in good+ to very good condition.
