Outside, a thickish November fog dulled the sound of the passing traffic, muffling the tall London house in a blanket of smoke-laden moisture, while within, lowered blinds and drawn curtains helped still further to exclude the noises of the street. Only the restless, uncertain firelight illumined the room, flickering now on some mellow surface of old polished wood, now on some rare piece of china or of glass which gleamed out fugitively, like a phantom, from the dusk of shelf or table where it lodged.
