About This Item
The first translation of Sigmund Freud into Russian. The first translation of one of Freud's main works "The Interpretation of Dreams" (Die Traumdeutung, The Interpretation of Dreams) in the world ! .
In Russia, the reception of Freud's works began quite early, immigrants from Russia were among the first students and patients of Freud. Max Eitingon was a native of Mogilev (modern Belarus), one of the first and most devoted students of Freud, the founder of a number of psychoanalytic societies, publishing houses, libraries and institutes, was one of the largest sponsors and talented managers of the psychoanalytic movement, who offered the PA community the educational model that still underlies analytical training today, one of the Presidents of the International Psychoanalytic Association (1925-1934), as well as one of the founders of the Palestinian PA Society, where he moved from Germany after the fascists came to power. Lou Andreas-Salome was a native of St. Petersburg, who had a significant impact on the cultural life of Europe in the late 19th - early 20th century, both through her own work and through her relationships with Nietzsche and Rilke; she met Freud in 1911, when she was 50 years old, and managed to enter the circle of his closest students and friends. Having mastered psychoanalysis, she left fiction and, while living in Götingen, worked a lot with patients and engaged in scientific work. Nikolai Osipov, Moses Wolf, Sabina Spielrein, Tatiana Rosenthal, and other natives of Russia studied and received consultations, corresponded with Freud, Jung, Abraham, participated in international congresses. One cannot but name among this number of Russian psychoanalytic celebrities the name of Sergei Pankeev, who went down in the history of psychoanalysis not as a famous colleague or a talented student of Freud, but as a Wolf-Man from the history of a childhood neurosis.
Until 1917, 22 translations of Freud's works were published in Russia. A total of 90 publications of Freud's works were made until 1930, followed by a break of almost 60 years, when psychoanalysis was actually banned in the USSR.
In 1904, the first translation of Freud was published in Russia. This translation becames the first translation of Freud`s main work in the world. For the first time, the most important work "On Dreams" ("The Interpretation of Dreams") was published. This work, as well as the "Psychopathology of Everyday Life", became the most reprinted books of Freud in Russia until 1930.
The history of Sigmund Freud's translations into Russian is still waiting for its researcher. According to our data, the first translation of Freud into Russian was not republished later, the name of the translator remains unknown. A very rare edition.
