Contemporary quarter red calf with marbled boards, gilt spine titles and decorations, raised bands, marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Eighty-one full-page hand-colored plates by Rowlandson. The classic of political satire by an eminent English artist who presaged Thomas Nast and the entire genre of the political cartoonist, this being a famous satirical work on William Gilpin, a British explorer who toured Britain to describe its picturesque landscape. Rubbing to bottom edges of boards, else a better than very good copy, free of chipping and scratching, free of rubbing-off of colors to marbling, and with bright colors and gilt. No marks and no restoration work of any kind: a tight solid set in unusually well preserved state, extremely scarce thus.

Publisher's blind-stamped cloth boards with gilt titling and decoration. All 3 volumes are in VERY GOOD condition overall, showing the extremities lightly shelf rubbed, the head and foot of the spines with loss, handsome former owner bookplate and signature of the period on the front paste-downs, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text and plates are exceptionally clean and unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. I and III. Truly fine set, plates very handsomely colored.
