The First Two Stuarts and the Puritan Revolution, 1603-1660 by Gardiner, Samuel Rawson - 1970

Embossed red cloth cover. Not a lot of wear for its age. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Four fold-out maps are intact, still bright (see two examples in photos #4 and 5). The original owner's name is inside the front cover. That owner, Gertrude Pritchard, appears to have been a schoolteacher in England in the early 20th century. I recently acquired a number of her books from an estate sale in Seattle. I have gathered those books into my "Pritchard Library" catalogue.

Small hardback - rust colored cloth with black lettering and decorations. 222 pages plus publisher ad s. Very early reprint. All four fold out maps are intact with some edge creasing to one. No date shown for publication (c.1887). Book Condition : Fair; Previous owner's name on front flyleaf dated 1892. Light dampstain to top edge of most pages and a couple pages have a little age staining, otherwise pages are clean and bright, no markings or tears. Cover is soiled and has suffered a bit from dampness that left some fading and light bowing to front left. Spine has light aging but gilt is bright, wear-through to corners, some tearing to spine with a little cloth missing to top of spine. Front hinge is lightly cracked inside, rear is intact, pages are secure. 0.

The story of the Stuarts up to the 1688 revolution. This volume is the second book of a trilogy, the first volume being "The Thirty Years War". In England, more happily than in France or Germany the problem of religious liberty was worked outin close connection with the problem of parliamentary government. England did not, even temporarily, cease to be a nation as was the case in Germany. Section V in Chapter 8 Describes, " Revival of the Idea of Toleration ".
