Synopsis

The Fish Can Sing by Halldor Laxness was translated from the original title Brekkukotsannáll by Magnus Magnusson. This tale tells of Alfgrim, an orphan, who has been raised by Bjorn of Brekkukot, a fisherman, in the early 1900's in Iceland. Alfgrim begins his education, and realizes that the world is much larger than the stone-and-turf cottage that has been his entire life.  He encounters a famous singer from Iceland, Gardar Holm, who has brought international attention to their small island.  The world begins to grow and change, just as Alfgrim does.
