Philadelphia: Fisher & Brother, No. 8 South Sixth Street, 1850. Wraps. Good - condition. A scarce children's illustrated primer, not recorded in Trove, with color animal woodblock illustrations, the letter K illustrated by a kangaroo: "the kangaroo is a very queer little creature. It is found in a place called New Holland" (p6).

Each page with two color wood block animal illustrations and text. The complete alphabet in upper and lower case, and multiplication table are printed inside the rear cover.

Tall 8vo, 13pp. Printed pictorial yellow wrappers, with publisher's advertisement on rear wrapper. Added period cloth spine. Tears at edges, some tears repaired with old sticky tape. Not a great copy, but being so rare, is worth adding to any K for kangaroo collection.

OCLC: 972725491 cites one copy dated 1862 based on the publisher's address in 1862 at 12 North Sixth Street, Philadelphia. This edition printed with the address, No. 8 South Sixth Street, Philadelphia; 71 Court Street, Boston; 74 Chatham Street, New York; 64 Baltimore Street, Baltimore. Not recorded in Trove.

Akron, Ohio: Saalfield Publ., 1953. Pamphlet. Very good overall. Children's dot-to-dot coloring book with poems on each page. On cover is an elephant using a red crayon to cross out the "Not" in 'Do not feed the animals." Dot to dot images become: penguins, parrots, kangaroo, bison, emu, fox, tiger etc.. Color wrappers, oblong, 8 1/4" x 5 1/2", 16 pp, staple bound, dot-to-dot completed. Very little wear, slt rub on spine head, top right corner, back cover slt scuff and mark where price sticker used to be.

London: David Bogue, 1853. Hardcover. From the 'Home Lesson Books' series. Scarce wood block illustrated children's volume, which includes engravings of a kangaroo and cockatoo. The kangaroo is described as "found in Australia. They have very long hind legs and thick tails. Under the breast, the female has a curious pouch, into which the young ones jump when they think the are in danger." (p28). Other animals illustrated include buffalo and polar bears. 16mo, 96pp. In the original plum gilt and blind stamped boards, with title in gilt at front board. Cloth sunned, short split at spine, a bit marked at rear board. Internally, inner hinge cracked, a few pages marked, a few short tears at page edges. The kangaroo illustration clean. Early owner name in pencil, dated 1854, at front paste down. OCLC: 8922489 records only 2 copies. Not recorded in Trove.

Reading, PA: W. C. Kantner, 1881. Hardcover. An instructional reader for children, beginning with single syllable words and progressing to multi-syllabic words. It is charmingly illustrated with wood block illustrations for each word, including some Australian flora and fauna, ie, the kangaroo, & lyre bird as well as the cassowary, sheep and whales. Printed in a large format, each page is illustrated with 12 b&w engravings of animals, people and objects, with the name of each below. Some of the American subjects include: Indian, Negro, washer woman, Esquimau, and velocipede. With 'Theodore Roosevelt's Letters to His Children' articles from the Poughkeepsie Evening Star laid down at early pages (through p21), and with many additional newspaper articles loosely inserted. 4to, 170pp. Brown gilt cloth with gilt title at front cover, no title at spine. Covers marked and rubbed, spine chipped head and tail. Internally, the last page toned from newspaper clipping loosely inserted. OCLC: 16163197.

1950. Framed print. Very good condition. I have always wondered about this nursery rhyme. What child would not be frightened by the prospect of dying in the middle of reciting what has become a nighttime prayer? It starts off well enough, but descends into darkness - "Now I lay me down to sleep / I pray the Lord, My soul to keep: / If I should die / Before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. The Wikipedia entry states that perhaps the earliest version was written by George Wheler in his 1698 book "The Protestant Monastery" and a later version with text consistent with this one printed in "The New England Primer". Of course, children died often in those days so perhaps not so strange a rhyme for the times. My mother created a less frightening version of this for my siblings and I, skipping the dying part and adding - Make me strong and good and free / And ever take good care of me.
