About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1868. First. Three-Quarter Leather. First edition. Vintage binding of forest green three-quarter leather over marbled paper covered boards; raised hubs decorated in gilt and with gilt floral decorations in the compartments. Matching marbled endpapers. Half-title printed in red; title page printed with ornate red border and an engraving of a charming little maid by Charles Henry Jeens. Designs throughout the text by Arthur Hughes and woodcuts by James Cooper. A charming collection in which each of the five children at Wentworth Grange offer a story for each of five days. Palgrave's only children's book touchingly dedicated to his own children. A very presentable copy, handsomely bound, outer hinges somewhat rubbed and with occasional scuffing to the tips.
