Original limp cloth wrappers blocked in gilt, grey, black, and white, blue endpapers, blue top-stain. 15 double-sided leaves of chromolithographic, metallic-printed, and embossed designs, of which 6 are folding, engravings throughout the other 290 pages. Minor bumps at the corners. A superb, fresh copy in unused condition with many of the leaves unopened and still delicately adhering to each other at the edges. A superb, unused Art Nouveau chromolithographic catalogue issued by the German pharmaceutical and medical supply firm Michael Birk, probably in the 1890s. This remarkable, 320 page catalogue catalogue contains 15 double-sided plates of elaborate chromolithographic, metallic, and embossed designs for product labels, as well as another 290 pages advertising an incredible array of other products. The chromolithographic labels could be ordered in bulk to be used on bottles and jars filled in person by the pharmacist, and some could be… Read More

Very Good. 29 plates with title page, cut, hand-tipped to sheets and bound in a red morocco leather binding, from Picart's series of costume plates of Dutch and Frisian fishermen, farmers, and others engraved by Gaspard Duchange. Originally printed on 6 leaves, and usually found unbound on 12 sheets, there seems to be only one missing plate: Poissonierre d'Amsterdam (Amsterdams viswijf), the fishmonger's wife. Small chip out of one of the two leather spine labels, with minor sunning to the edges, otherwise clean and bright, with no markings. In stock, ready to ship now from Evanston, IL!

Very good copy of the fourth and best edition of this famous Renaissance collection of world costumes.With 513 costume plates printed on fine vellum paper, with each plate facing a page of descriptive text in Italian and French.This new edition has all the original costume plates corrected by Gerard Seguin and engraved on wood by Etienne Huyot. The decorative frames to both costume and text pages were engraved by H. Catenacci and Fellmann.A panorama of world costume from European nobility and peasants, Venetian senators, prostitutes, Turkish pirates and dervishes, ancient Roman soldiers, fanciful Japanese and Nestorian costumes, Native Americans from Virginia and Peru taken from travel books, etc. Cesare Vecellio (c.1521-1601) was an Italian artist, cousin and assistant to Titian, active in Venice and Augsburg. In 1590, he published his collection of costumes of all nations with woodcuts copied from Christoph Krieger. Good copy of a suite of 24 finely hand-coloured lithographs depicting the people of the worldComplete with all 24 illustrations by Felix Fossey and Auguste Leloir, richly hand-coloured figures on sepia-tinted backgrounds (it was also issued in sepia only)The plates depict people from five continents, with 11 from Europe, three of Asia, three of Africa, three of America and three of Oceania. Frontispiece shows the dispersion of people from the Tower of Babel. The plates show traditional inhabitants of the regions: flamenco dancers in Spain, kilted highlanders in Britain, Berbers and Arabs in Algeria, Sami people in Norway, etc. The backgrounds are atmospheric locations such as street markets, a Chinese palace courtyard with pagoda, Indian temples, Dutch windmills, Senatskaia Square in St. Petersburg, Russia, etc. Many of the scenes include fascinating vignettes.
