About This Item

[Amsterdam, c.1622]. [Possibly Mercator-Hondius, 1628]. A copper engraved map on laid paper, uncoloured. Imprint at lower right: Petrus Kaerius coelavit. Plate size is 51.5cm x 37cm, on a sheet measuring 55.5cm x 47cm. Small yellowed tape remains on verso at bottom of fold, some splitting along lower fold, a clean very good copy. Text on verso is in French, the headings: La partie de Flandres plus Orientale and LA PARTIE DE FLANDRES / PLUS ORIENTALE. Page numbers on verso are 183/184. Signature mark is Eeee. Probably from a French edition of Van Den Keere's Germania Inferior [orig. 1617]; The French title: La Germanie inférieure de Petrus Keerius : c'est à dire: Nouvelles et exactes cartes géographiques des XVII provinces dicelle [1622]. However, the page numbers on the verso of the 1622 edition map are 40/41,the signature mark is Q, and the layout of the heading on pg. 183 is different. This map may be from a different French printing of Van Den Keere, or possibly from a French edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas [1628?]. A copy of this map is visible on the Catawiki site, from the 1628 Mercator-Hondius Atlas, with verso page numbers of 369/372, and a signature mark Aaaaa. Stanford Libraries shows an image of this map with Latin text, "From Hondius' Mercator-Hondius atlas,1606". A complex publishing history
