About This Item

Los Altos, Ca: William Kaufmann Inc, (1973). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. 272p octavo, A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Laid in is a 49 line T.L.S. from John Updike to Martin Gardner July 29, 1985. signed by John Updike with his stamped name and address below his signature. A very warm letter beginning thus "...Dear Mr. Gardner: This is a belated fan letter if ever there was one; but I just read "The Flight of Peter Fromm", having been sent a free copy a dozen years ago because you did me the honor of including a poem of mine in it." He continues explaining he didn't want to read while he was writing about a divinity school teacher and a theistic student and was afraid to read his work for fear of making his, ie Updike's unnecessary. "You wonder in print if I am still a Barthian...I like the way Barth writes his letters , as well as his dogmatics -- as firm and warm as Tillich is shifty" ....."Also, thank you for admiring Chesterton, as you also tell us in "Whys of P.S." I turned to him before finding Barth." ......."And I miss your math column in the Scientific American; I couldn't always follow it, but I read it to the end, wheras these new fellows with their computer-think lose me midway, Warm Regards John Updike
