About This Item

Berthoud, Colorado: Sandra Hargrove, 2016. Paperback. [i - ii], ii - viii, [ix - x], 127pp. No jacket (as issued). First published 2012. Revised edition 2016. Golden Age English artist Florence Harrison, was for many years identified as "Emma" Florence Harrison. In 2009 a startling revelation was made. The artist known for her Romantic/Pre-Raphaelite illustrations, fairy and children's art, poems and stories was actually one Florence "Susan" Harrison. Although her correct identity was made public, many collectors, book dealers and art experts were slow to accept the truth and correct their information. Today, many still confuse the two artists. This book presents the biographies of both women. By comparing and contrasting their lives, it was hoped thst the last shreds of lingering doubt and confusion would be puit to rest so that the correct accreditation would be given to the true Blackie illustrator. Each woman's story is a fascinating tale that reveals much about the common challenges faced by female artists in early 20th century England. Events of each artist's life provide insights into why one gained fame as an illustrator while the other did not. This revision of the first edition was made to include new information, pictures, maps and details uncovered about the lives of each woman. Of particular interest is a newly found picture of a young Florence Harrison at the start of her career. Book in near fine condition.
