About This Item
[Florida, c. 1887]. Photograph on mount. Overall 5¾ x 9¼ inches; image 4¼ x 7 inches. Imprinted on mount: "Negative on Stanley Dry Plate. Printed by J.B. Hunter on N.P.A. Green Ex. Brill. Albumen Paper." Light foxing in margins; few scattered stains in image; brief corner wear; very good.
Photomontage of Florida scenes showing views in Old St. Augustine and Jacksonville and such vignettes as a field of pineapples, a "Florida poodle" (alligator), two Black boys, and a humorous drawing of a "Florida Land Agent." Marcus H. Rogers took the photographs, and many of them have their own captions, implying that they were sold as individual prints or possibly as postcards.
Rogers' process for creating his composite is described in great technical detail on p73 of Anthony's Photographic Bulletin (Vol. XVIII. No. 3. February 12, 1887). The reader was promised a future article, written by Rogers himself, that would discuss the photo and to be entitled "Mewsings on the Mosaic."
Anthony's was published serially in printed wrappers. This article implies that subscribers received an actual photographic copy of Rogers' A Florida Mosaic within this issue.
