Edited and with Introduction by Donald W. Faulkner. Binding of black half-cloth, with white titles, brown paper-wrapped boards, very clean and unmarked with light rubbing of lower edge and spine heel. Tight and solid, square with sharp corners. Lower edge (of text block) has two partial blue circles with design stamped on (rem mk?). Rough cut. Interior is very clean and free from any markings, no creases. Jacket is rubbed, not price-clipped, no edgewear. This is a selection of Malcolm Cowley's writings from the last forty years (prior to 1985), divided into three parts: "The War Years and After"; "The Usable Past", which searches for the traditions and continuities of American writing in its 19th century roots; and "Assessments and Retrospections", which focuses on contemporary writers, i.e. Willa Cather, Conrad Aiken, John P. Marquand, James Gould Cozzens, James T Farrell, Mencken, Auden, Twain, and others. 390 pages. 8.75 x 6 inches. Viking Press, New York and Canada, 1985.
