About This Item

London, Frederick Warne, 1899. New edition (revised).. A bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. xiv, (1), 1-269; xii, 1-279; xi, 1-258; xi, 1-213 with 319 fine colored plates after paintings by Anne Pratt. Original one-half black morocco leather over dark green leather-covered boards, spine with five raised bands each decorated with small gilt horizontal lines and sent off by double gilt panel lines, red morocco title label in one compartment lettered in gilt, volume numbered stamped in gilt in one other compartment and with gilt floral design vignette in the remaining four other compartments, all page edges are spectacled in red, lg 8vo. According to Edward Step, who revised the volume: "All the coloured plates have been specially compared for this edition with the carefully hand-coloured originals; and the colour printing has been thereby improved." Indeed, the colored plates are bright with crisp edges to the flowers and leaves and with vivid coloration. This copy is also beautifully bound. No ownership marks and few signs of use.
