Boston: Ginn & Company WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Olive green cloth with black-stamped titles, frontispiece, vii, 692 pp, bibliography, index. No date, but after Sumner's death in 1910, according to the second preface. Copyright date 1906. Spine faded & browned, extremities rubbed, corners bumped and small repaired snag to cloth at top corner of front board, paper clean but browned and somewhat brittle, with a small closed tears (of a few mm) at edges of a few leaves, some pages unopened; a very solid and readable copy. Sumner discusses the strength of the long-established customs of a society in determining the actions of its members. He draws his conclusions from observations of many different societies, both historical and modern, and includes the details of copious examples. A few chapter headings: The Struggle for Existence; Labor, Wealth; Slavery; Abortion, Infanticide, Killing the Old; Uncleanness and the Evil Eye; The Mores can make Anything Right and prevent Condemnation of Anything; Sacral Harlotry, Child Sacrifice.
