New York 1899, Harper. Green pictorial cloth, 2 vol. set,top gilt, 306+249p., appendix, large color fold out map, 4 color profuse b.w. illustraions, very good. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION A most comprehensive earlly book on Tibet before that count- ry was open to Westerners. Addresses its geography, ethnic tribes & peoples, customs, social structure, nicely illustr- ated with drawings by the British author. He travelled with only his native porters into the primitive and hitherto unk- nown lands of the high Himalayas, to places never traversed before by Europeans. Landor was a keen and trained observer, who skillfully recorded the details virtually everything he encountered, including some superb geographical discoveries. The only sad event was his eventual capture & brutal torture by Tibetans. This text is by far one of the most engrossing on early Tibet.
