London:: Printed and sold by the Assigns of J. Sawle,, 1720.. The second edition.. 8vo.. Modern antique fine binding full calf with beautiful floral gilt designs to spine title on red label. New endpapers. Old owners signature to first blank in contemporary ink. T1 with small corner tear repaired no affect, else a near fine copy clean and crisp with large margins. Publisher ad leaf at end. Scarce book. At time of description we locate no other copies for sale. Thomas Ellwood (1639-1713), English writer of religion, Quaker and good friend of John Milton. It is said that Ellwood is responsible for the idea of Parardise Regained for Milton had not thought of a sequel to Paradise Lost until Ellwood mentioned it while reading the manuscript of Paradise Lost.... Ellwood was the author of several polemical works in defense of Quaker position of which Forgery no Christianity (1674), The Foundation of Tithes Shaken (1678) and two tracts attacking Thomas Hicks deserve mention. His autobiography The History of the Life of Thomas Ellwood written by his own hand and published posthumously is a vaulable historical document and has been in print continuously since 1714.
