London, Smith, Elder and Co.,1861, first edition; 8vo, pp 226, [2] plus 16pp of publisher advertisements dated December 1862; original embossed green cloth, spine gilt, yellow end papers, engraved frontispiece; spine dulled and corners bumped, binding somewhat shaken and a two-signature unit (pp65-96) loose; frontispiece and title page a little soiled but generally otherwise clean throughout; firm ownership inscription dated '79 and with two bookplates (Herbert A Strong, and C S Currie) on the front end papers.
