About This Item

Houghton, Mifflin and Co; Boston, 1891 First edition. Green cloth-covered boards, gilt spine and front board lettering, 7 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches, 464 pp. Good plus or very good minus (moderate edgewear, slight cover staining). The first story, "Fourteen to One" has a previous owner's underlinings and brackets in blue pencil, alone with a note in red pencil, "An exceedingly strong and realistic story of reconstruction times." This is a collection of short stories, including some previously published in book form. The lead story is, as the previous owner has noted, a strong story. The Ku Klux Klan and their lynching tactics figure prominently. BAL 20949. (K063). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.
