Issued in conjunction with a 1983 exhibition held to "attempt to establish the picture frame as an artistic work worthy of consideration in its own right." (preface) Includes narrative about methods and materials, including gold leaf and gilding and picture-hanging devices, as well as a chronological survey of stylistic development across two centuries. An excellent, and rare, reference work on American Frames.
