A fine, framed and glazed, watercolour. Signed to the bottom left hand side. Painting 580 mm x 390 mm; frame: 820 mm x 650 mm, landscape. Acid free double mount with ruled lines and narrow band of gilt, gilt frame. Very good, frame lightly knocked in a few places, small paper imperfection or mark to the top right hand corner. UK shipping for this item is likely be around £20 please email for details. Provenance - Featured at Christie's London 18.11.04 lot 221 with the title at the Water's Edge and an Est. of £1000 -1500. Edward Frank Southgate RBA (1872 -1916) A British painter. He spent most of his life in Norfolk and concentrated on painting birds, especially waterfowl, and hunting scenes. He was a student at Bideford Art School and Cambridge School of Art and a member for the Royal Society of British Artists, RSA .His paintings of ducks and other birds are internationally renowned and very collectible. He also illustrated several books such as Patterson's Notes of an East Coast Naturalist and Nature in Eastern Norfolk . Hugh Bertie Campbell (1928). Wildfowl & waders: Nature & Sport in the coastlands. Southgate died in 1916, whilst serving in the Army during the First World War in France, aged just 43 years. He received a short 'In Memoriam' (in Dutch) by A.B. Wigman in De Levende Natuur (vol. 21, 1916). .
