About This Item

London: Heinemann, 1962-1963 . First edition. Cloth. Fine/Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 6". None. A lovely set of two first UK editions of works by American author J.D. Salinger, author of 'The Catcher in the Rye'. Present here are the first UK editions of 'Franny and Zooey', 1962, and 'Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction', 1963.In the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrappers. The first work is composed of the short story 'Franny', and novella 'Zooey'. They had initially both appeared in the New Yorker magazine in 1955 and 1957 respectively. This work focuses on the two youngest siblings of the Glass family, a family who made frequent appearances throughout Salinger's writing. 'Franny' tells the story of an undergraduate visiting her boyfriend in an unnamed college town.  'Zooey' is set shortly afterwards, with the titular character, a young actress, experiencing an existential breakdown in her parents Manhattan apartment, and receiving comfort from her younger sister Franny. The two novellas in the second work also feature the Glass family, with 'Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters' narrated by Buddy Glass and describing his army leave, during which he attends his brother Seymour's wedding.'Seymour: an Introduction' is Buddy's description of his brother Seymour, told in stream of consciousness as Buddy remembers his brother from his home. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with price unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent, with minor bumps to 'Roof Beam' back strip head and tail. Light sunning to dust wrapper back strips. Rubbing to head of 'Franny' back strip, with small closed tear over front joint. Spotting to 'Franny' front wrap, and light handling marks to rear. Card reinforcement running the head of the length of the dust wrapper reverse. 'Roof Beam' wrap perimeters age toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Fine

Synopsis

Franny and Zooey is J. D. Salinger's third book, published as such in 1961, its two parts having originally appeared as a short story and a novella in The New Yorker in 1955 and 1957, respectively. Franny and Zooey, a sister and brother both in their 20s, are the two youngest members of the Glass family, which was a frequent focus of Salinger's writings. The action of both parts takes place over a long weekend in November 1955.
