About This Item

Walker, Hamza & Thelma Golden. Foreword by Lowery Stokes Sims. FREESTYLE. New York: The Studio Museum in Harlem, 2001. First Edition. 4to. Illustrated Wrappers. Exhibition Catalog. Very Good. 90pp, profusely illustrated in color + color cover. With an exhibition checklist and artists' biographies. This is the catalogue published in conjunction with "Freestyle" - the significant 2001 Studio Museum in Harlem exhibition curated by Thelma Golden and Christine Y. Kim. The show featured work by Laylah Ali, John Bankston, Sanford Biggers in collaboration with Jennifer Zackin, Mark Bradford, Louis Cameron, Rico Gatson, Deborah Grant, Kojo Griffin, Adler Guerrier, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Tana Hargest, Kira Lynn Harris, David Huffman, Jerald Ieans, Rashid Johnson, Vincent Johnson, Jennie C. Jones, Arnold J. Kemp, Dave McKenzie, Julie Mehretu, Adia Millett, Kori Newkirk, Camille Norment, Senam Okudzeto, Clifford Owens, Nadine Robinson, Susan Smith-Pinelo, and Eric Wesley. "Golden curated the works of twenty-eight emerging black artists, characterizing the work as "Post-Black" - a term she generated along with artist Glenn Ligon as a genre of art that had ideological and chronological dimensions and repercussions. It was characterized by artists who were adamant about not being labeled as "black" artists, though their work was steeped, in fact deeply interested, in redefining complex notions of blackness." A handsome example of this now uncommon influential document showing some minor wear and creasing to the covers. Inventory Number: 027096
