Johnson, xviii + 549 pages. Jean-Paul Sartre (French: 1905 - 1980) was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. He was one of the key figures in Existentialism and phenomenology, and one of the leading figures in 20th-century French philosophy and Marxism. His work has influenced sociology, critical theory, post-colonial theory, and literary studies. Sartre was also noted for his open relationship with prominent feminist and fellow existentialist philosopher and writer Simone de Beauvoir. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature but rather gracefully refused the honor. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION! Synopsis

Jean-Paul Sartre was a prolific philosopher, novelist, public intellectual, biographer, playwright and founder of the journal Les Temps Modernes . Born in Paris in 1905 and died in 1980, Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964—and turned it down. His books include Nausea, Intimacy , The Flies , No Exit, Sartre’s War Diaries, Critique of Dialectical Reason , and the monumental treatise Being and Nothingness . Quintin Hoare is the director of the Bosnian Institute and has translated numerous works by Sartre, Antonio Gramsci, and other French authors. He lives in the United Kingdom.
