Fuller's Worthies by Thomas Fuller - Hardcover - 1987 - from ACP Family Bookstore and

Fuller's Worthies

by Fuller, Thomas

Condition: New/New

Selected from The Worthies of England by Thomas Fuller, edited and introduced by Richard Barber. The History of the Worthies of England was first published in 1662. Amply illustrated.

If we remember the Elizabethan age for its playwrights or the Victorian period for its novelists, the archetypical literary genre of the Restoration is surely biography and autobiography, taken in their widest sense. In Fuller's work, thre is a lingering sense of the incense of piety: de mortuis nil nisi bonum. The author's purpose was to edify the reader. With Fuller, we would want to dine at leisure. He is a comfortable writer, marvellously entertaining and well-informed.

This is a collector's edition, with fine leather binding in black, with a white, rigid slipcase. 441 pages.

Set in Garamond by Tradespools Ltd and printed by Butler and Tanner Ltd, Frome on Edinburgh Antique Laid paper. Binding design by David Eccles.
