If Harris had stayed home that Sunday, he would have saved himself a lot of trouble. He had just finished his book about the Trans-Equatorial Mining Company, an expose guaranteed to cause concern in banking and political circles, and hoped to sell the serial rights to the Sunday Defendant. But Sunday was not his lucky day. Everything went wrong from the first and constinued to do so in a bewildering fashion. When the Defendant shows only perfunctory interest in his book, Harris decides to treat himself to a holiday in Amsterdam, where he meets some odd characters. Returning to England, he immediately runs into trouble. He can't believe the police will arrest him, but they do. He goes to find a man who might clear his name and finds a body.
