Inscribed by the author with her true name, "Ruth Rendell as [Barbara Vine] To Stephen Gould with best wishes." The recipient was Stephen Jay Gould, the noted American paleontologist and writer. Rendell was one of his favorite writers and he mentions her in several of his books.
