[From jacket flap] A well-known nonconformist in Indian politics, Sudhir Ghosh was greatly influenced by Gandhi and the Quakers, to whom he was drawn as an undergraduate at Cambridge. His independent qualities of mind led Gandhi to favor him as an emissary over more logical choices. In addition to his unofficial services, Ghosh held various senior government posts, including the directorship of the first Community Development Project at Faridabad, Punjab, where forty refugees, under his leadership, built a town almost with their bare hands.For the last six years of his life Sudhir Ghosh was a Member of the Indian Parliament. In 1963-64, he attempted, with Nehruââ¬â¢s support, to persuade the United States and Russia to act together for a peaceful settlement of the problems between India and China. Until his death in February 1967, he was engaged in carrying out an irrigation project in his home district of West Bengal.
