About This Item
London, UK: Penguin, 1989. First Edition, 27th Printing . Paperback. Near Fine/None as Issued. Text/NEW w/margin discoloration. Soft cover/NF w/light wear & sticker removal loss to lower back corner. Collection of 15 short stories of New Zealand by Katherine Mansfield, pseudonym of Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (1888-1923). First published 1922 in literary magazines; this is Penguin reissue. The early 20th century setting for the stories is loosely based upon Mansfield's childhood home in Wellington and carries autobiographical undertones. "The Garden Party", the title story, centers on an annual garden party held by the well-to-do Sheridan family. During its elaborate preparations, news arrives of an accidental, tragic the death of a working-class man living in the poorer part of the village. Told through young Laura Sheridan's reaction to the day. She did so look forward to the party; finding her family at large simply brushing off the tradegy by assuming the man was drunk, makes her question class prejudices and the absurdity of class distinctions.
