About This Item

Committee For The Family, West Chester, PA, 1900; First Edition; 8vo, 693 pages; maroon cloth boards; gilt titles; top edges gilt. Detailed genealogy of the Darlington family from 1580 origins in Great Britain to date of publication. An historic American family, the Darlingtons first established themselves in America in 1711 with their arrival from Darnall, Cheshire, England, at Chester County, Pennsylvania, where they soon set about to distinguish themselves. A copious work, comprised of 580 pages of genealogical text plus an exhaustive 113 page alphabetical index of family members by surname and Christian name at the back. Includes a full-page b&w engraved place of the Darlington coat of arms, with guard tissue. Compiled by Gilbert Cope, engaged by the Darlington family in 1894 for the purpose. Former copy of Helen Darlington, great-great granddaughter of Dr. William P. Darlington of West Chester (1782-1863) noted early Pennsylvania physician and Congressman, who was author, among other things, of "Flora Cestrica," (1837) a landmark study of the flowering and filicoid plants of Chester County, PA. Very Good, with some genealogical annotations recorded by Ms. Darlington in the margins and rear blank end paper. Two vintage newspaper clippings relating to Darlington family history attached to the f.f.e.p. Front hinge starting. A rare genealogical resource on one of early America’s prominent families.
