Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (1829 - 1894) was a highly regarded Austrian surgeon; amateur musician, scholar of music, and close friend of Johannes Brahms. As a surgeon, he is generally regarded as the founding father of modern abdominal surgery. He also did major studies of "wound fever." In addition to many intestinal operations, he was the first to conduct an esophagectomy, the first aryngectomy, and excision of rectal caner.<br/><br/>While in Zurich, Dr. Billroth published his classic textbook Die allgemeine chirurgische Pathologie und Therapie (translated as our copy: General Surgical Pathology and Therapy) (1863).
