Jacob Abbott was an author of children's stories. Jacob was born in Hallowell, Maine. Jacob?s father was Jacob Abbott and his mother was Betsey Abbott. He studied at the Hallowell Academy. Jacob finished studying at Bowdoin College in 1820. He enrolled at Andover Theological Seminary in 1821, 1822, and 1824. He became a teacher in 1824?1825. He was a successful writer, creating youthful fiction, short histories, biographies, spiritual texts for the common reader, and a number of works in general science. He made 180 books and was a cowriter or editor of 31 more. He died in Farmington, Maine, where he had spent half of his life after 1839, and where his brother, Samuel Phillips Abbott, instituted the Abbott School.
