London: Richard H. Laurie, 1821. Later printing. Print. Very good condition. A portrait of Anson, the third English circumnavigator of the globe, (after Drake and Dampier) and considered the father of the British Navy. Anson skirted the coast of Brazil, rounded Terra Del Fuego, visited Juan Fernandes Island off the coast of Chili, and then visited the west coast of Mexico, skirted the Californian coast, and visited the Philippines & Guam. Anson's book, "A Voyage Round the World..." is a classic account of circumnavigation, considered a masterpiece of descriptive travel. Anson's voyage appears to have been the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century. (Hill p. 318.)

From the BM catalogue entry: Portrait after Reynolds (Mannings 67a); standing three-quarter length to right with his right hand on his hip and left resting on anchor, eyes to front, wearing shoulder-length wig and embroidered coat and waistcoat, ship and foliage behind; published state after publisher altered to Laurie. 1755, this impression 1821.
