New York: The Viking Press, 1976. First trade edition of Georgia O'Keeffe's lavishly illustrated career retrospective, presented by O'Keeffe to the book's photographer Malcolm Varon: "With appreciation for your part in helping to make this book / Sincerely / Georgia O'Keeffe / 1977." In these pages, O'Keeffe follows her creative awakening from her first childhood drawings through her iconic images of flowers, bones, and the topography of Taos. Vivid color reproductions of over one hundred paintings accompany her meditations on her development as an artist: "I find that I have painted my life -- things happening in my life -- without knowing." The colophon notes that "the color photography for this book was for the most part executed specially by Malcolm Varon," who would be O'Keeffe's photographer of choice until her death a decade later. Issued simultaneously with a signed limited edition of 175 copies. A near-fine copy with a wonderful association, warmly inscribed by O'Keeffe. Folio, measuring 16 x 11.75 inches: [228]. Original textured ivory cloth lettered in brown, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated with 104 color plates, one folding, of O'Keeffe's paintings; portrait of O'Keeffe by Dan Budnik. Presentation inscription from O'Keeffe to photographer Malcolm Varon on half-title. Opening pages toned.

Description:
Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Large 4to. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt; marbled pastedown endpapers. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. A rare title: OCLC locates only 13 libraries with any of the volumes. Ours is a very nice (vg+) copy with text and plates on clean and supple laid paper; very… Read More

Description:
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First edition of Thackeray's comic masterpiece, illustrated by the author. "A novel without a hero," Vanity Fair follows the entangled adventures of two school friends, the gentle, trusting Amelia Sedley and the calculating Becky Sharp, as they come of age during the Napoleonic Wars. "Are not there little chapters in everybody's life, that seem to be nothing, and yet affect all the rest of the history? Let us then step into the coach with the Russell-square party, and be off to the Gardens." First issue, with the heading on page 1 in rustic type, the woodcut of the debauched Marquis of Steyne on 336 (suppressed in later issues, as based too obviously on the late Lord Hertford), and "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on 453. A fine copy, splendidly bound by Riviere & Son. Octavo, measuring 8 x 5 inches: xvi, 624. Early twentieth-century polished calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, red and green morocco spine labels,… Read More
