About This Item
London: George Routledge and Co., 1857. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 6". Brothers Dalziel. An attractive edition of Campbell's beautifully illustrated poem telling the story of the 1778 Wyoming Valley Massacre. Illustrations throughout, including illustrated half title. Thomas Campbell (27 July 1777 15 June 1844) was a Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing specially with human affairs. "Gertrude of Wyoming" is a romantic epic in Spenserian stanza composed by Campbell in 1809. The poem was well received, but not a financial success for its author. The setting of the poem is the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania and the massacre that occurred there on July 3, 1778. On that day, more than three hundred American Revolutionaries died at the hands of Loyalists and their Iroquois allies. The Brothers Dalziel were a highly productive firm of Victorian engravers founded in 1839 by George Dalziel (1815-1902) and his brother Edward Dalziel (1817-1905). Until the advent of photo-mechanical processes in about 1880, they were pre-eminent in their trade. In an armorial full calf binding, expertly rebacked with gilt titling to spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Nice patina. Slight wear to corners and the odd mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound with some spotting. Very Good
