GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878). Welles was the United States Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. DS. 1pg. February 27, 1863. N.p. A typed document signed “Gideon Welles” as U.S. Secretary of the Navy on “Navy Department” letterhead. “Sir: Having been on duty as an acting Masters Mate in the Navy of the United States, on temporary service, from 24th, your appointment from that date is hereby confirmed. After having executed the enclosed oath, and returned it to the Department, with your letter of acceptance, you will report to Commodore Montgomery for instruction in Gunnery. Very Respectfully, Gideon Welles”. The document is engrossed and annotated in another hand. It is in very good condition.
