Philadelphia: C. Sherman, Printer, 1852.. 1852.. Very good. - Octavo, brown cloth titled in gilt on the front cover with decorations stamped in blind on both covers & raised bands on the spine. The binding is lightly bumped with the head & tail of the spine creased. There is light staining to the covers & a small black stain to the front cover. 85 & [3] pages. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. There is occasional foxing, mainly to the prelims & to a few rear leaves. Very good. <p>First edition<p>Girard was from a French family in Bordeaux. He became an officer in the French mercantile marine and eventually came to Philadelphia where he founded the Girard College for Orphans. An inscription on the front endpaper states that this copy of the book was bought at Girard College on October 23rd, 1852 and that the owner, Duncan Thompson, "on that day was admitted by permit given him by J. J. Boswell to enter the above named college and taken through all the rooms and buildings connected with it. / This Book gives a very definite description of the buildings." James J. Boswell is listed as a member of the Board of Directors of the College.
