THE GIRLS by JOHN BOWEN - 1987: A Story of Village Life

This is a stated first printing of the first US edition of The Girls, by English playwright and novelist John Bowen (1924 – 2019). It was published in the UK in 1986, then by the Atlantic Monthly Press in 1987.

Its full title is The Girls: A Story of Village Life, and it is about a bizarre chain of events that encompasses birth, death, and the joys of parenthood; the contentment of country life, and the stench of a dead body in the septic tank; the natural and supernatural in outrageous forms; sex in the back of a truck at the Inland Waterways Rally; flying accusations at the Flower Show; and the decline and fall of the village policeman. Sometimes ridiculous, always gallant, The Girls triumph in the end, but not until they have endured moments of high drama, stark horror and pure farce.

Gore Vidal called it 'satisfying horror.'

This copy has never been read—it has never been opened. It's perfect, although the spine of the dust jacket has darkened a little bit.
