About This Item

Venezia: Presso Girolamo Albrizzi, 1700. First Italian Edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. A world history and geography by the Abbe Pierre Le Lorrain de Vallemont (1649 - 1721) French antiquary and scientist from Rouen, who wrote this world history and also works on scientific & numismatic topics. The first French edition appeared in 1696 and was updated and added to for years afterwards; this an early Italian text version. The geographical portion is of special interest, having descriptions of New France and Florida, California as an island and mention of Antarctica as well as the recently discovered lands of Australia. A fascinating uncut copy with original paper boards.

Two volume edition; Vol I: (40), 388pp; Vol II: (28), 456pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 22 full page heraldic illustration plates in Vol. I depicting coats of arms, shields, blazonry; with woodcut initials, tailpiece illustrations, typeface ornamentation throughout. Small 8vo, approximately 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" (14 x 19 cm); bound in paste-paper boards, with patterned paper covered spines, handwritten paper spine labels. Some edge, tips wear, soiling & rubbing to the bindings. Front cover of Vol I pulled loose from the block, inner hinge tissue repair, intact; text leaves very fresh and clean, in very good condition overall. OCLC: 436472467 records one institutional holding of this version of Vallemont's history.
