About This Item
A Zurich, 1796. 8vo. 5 leaves. LV. 1 leaf. 127 pages. Green quarter-morocco, ornamented spine with nerves, upper edge gilt (Raparlier). Very rare First Edition of this philosophical-poetic essay on love, printed in only one hundred copies on vellum paper. In the essay on erotic poetry that precedes the poem announced in the title (pp. I-LV), the author argues for a return to nature in line with the principles of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Montesquieu to whom he refers several times. The poem is also followed by copious explanatory notes (pp.55-127). Nicolas Cammaille-Saint-Aubin (1770-1832) was a playwright and theatre actor in Paris. He left several theatre plays, often inspired by revolutionary ideals. Not in Quérard. Barbier, II, 545.
