"The Golden Apples" is a series of stories that are connected; when the book was nearing publication, Eudora Welty corresponded with her publisher, trying to find a way to accurately describe the collection, which she did not want published as a novel; she proposed a title along the lines of "Aspects of Morgana".

Welty had, when this book was published, already won the O. Henry Award and would win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction over twenty years later, in 1972, for "The Optimist's Daughter".

___DESCRIPTION: Green paper boards with a cranberry-coloured cloth spine, gilt lettering on the spine, small pictorial design in gilt on the lower right corner of the front board of a flower and a clock, plain endpapers; just under 8" tall, pagination: [i-x] [1] 2-244. The dust jacket shows the original price of $3.00, pictorial front, spine and back panels in shades of green and light red over white, summary of book on front and back flap; first state dust jacket points present per Polk.

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some very slight edgewear and a spot of foxing on the fore-edge. The dust jacket is unclipped, overall very good with minor edgewear, mostly at the head and tail of the spine, with some sunning to the spine.
