London.: Hodder & Stoughton.. 1991.. Many black and white line illustrations throughout, 181pp, very good in dustjacket, 22 x 18.5cm. This book is divided into two parts the first the letters of the young Kwei-li to her new husband and the second letters to her mother-in-law 25 years later when her husband was governor of Kiang-su.

Originally published as My Lady of the Chinese Courtyard (translated by Elizabeth Cooper, although it is not known how much the translator embellished the work) this edition has been adapted with a foreword by Eileen Goudge and illustrated by Zhang Qing. .
