In 1944, reacting to pressure from civil rights movement , the Navy selected sixteen of some one hundred thousand enlisted African Americans to attend a condensed version of officer’s training in order to provide the illusion of equality. Despite continued discrimination, these sixteen officers laid the ground work for future efforts at racial integration within the military.
