"All that I am or hope to be I owe to my mother."
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
This is a rare edition of one of the most beautiful books ever made, and it is the only one I have ever found offered with these gold-stamped full leather covers.
This is a collection of essays and reflections on motherhood, home, and the concept of heaven. McGahern, a renowned Irish writer, explores these topics with insight and sensitivity, offering readers a deeper understanding of the complexities and beauty of these fundamental aspects of human experience. The book delves into the emotional and spiritual dimensions of motherhood, the importance of home as a place of comfort and belonging, and the idea of heaven as a symbol of ultimate peace and fulfillment. This book helps us reflect on the profound significance of these timeless concepts in our lives.
Below, you will find a collection of passages I have hand-picked from this volume's texts. It will shed a glimmer of light on what it entails, but know that there is so much more. With a compendium of over 300 authors, it is a treasure trove of Victorian literature.
"Tis a mother's large affection
Hears with a mysterious sense, —
Breathings that escape detection Whisper faint,
and fine inflection Thrill in her with power intense.
Childhood's honeyed words untaught
Hiveth she in loving thought, Tones that never thence depart.
For she listens—with her heart."
"There is no death! The stars go down To rise upon some fairer shore;
And bright in Heaven's jeweled crown
They shine forevermore.
There is no death! The dust we tread Shall change beneath the summer showers.
To golden grain or mellow fruit, Or rainbow-tinted flowers.
To feed the hungry moss they bear, the forest leaves drink daily life from the viewless air.
There is no death! The leaves may fall, The flowers may fade and pass away;
They only wait through wintry hours
The coming of May."
"There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign ;
Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain.
There everlasting spring abides, And never-withering flowers ;
Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heavenly land from ours.
Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dressed in living green ;
So to the people, old Canaan stood While Jordan rolled between.
Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er,
Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood,
Should fright us from the shore."
"The light, the spell-word of the heart, Our guiding star in weal or woe, Our talisman—our earthly chart-
That sweetest name that Earth can know.
We breathed it first with lisping tongue. When cradled in her arms, we lay ;
Fond memories around that name are hung
That will not, cannot pass away.
We breathed it then, we breathe it still, More dear than sister, friend, or brother;
The gentle power, the magic thrill, Awakened in the name of Mother."
"Through earth has many beautiful spots, as a poet or painter might show, yet more lovely and beautiful, holy and bright, to the hopes of the heart and the spirit's glad sight, is the land no mortal may know.
0! who but must pine in this dark vale of tears, From its clouds and its shadows to go, To walk in the light of the glory above,
And to share in the peace, and the joy, and the love, Of the land that no mortal may know!
There the crystalline stream, bursting forth from the throne, Flows on, and forever will flow;
Its waves as they roll are with melody rife, And its waters are sparkling with beauty and life, In the land no mortal may know.
And there on its margin, with leaves ever green, With its fruits healing sickness and woe,
"The fair tree of life, in its glory and pride, is fead by that deep, inexhaustible tide Of the land which no mortal may know."
The overall condition of this book is very good despite being printed well over a century ago. It displays some of the typical attributes of aging associated with a 19th-century volume. This includes some age and shelf wear to the covers, although they have been very well-kept. The interior pages display some natural age toning and the occasional age spot but have been well preserved. It is a clean, complete, and incredibly beautiful book.
"The compiler of this volume has rendered a most valuable service by collecting into one sheaf these golden gleanings. To give his work the greatest richness and variety, he has laid under the contribution of more than three hundred widely-known authors on both sides of the Atlantic. In the main, his selections have been made with excellent taste, the ruling motive being to choose those things that would be the most practical and profitable. Many of them are already familiar to us all, but that very fact proves their value. There are other readers coming on the stage of life who need to know these " household words," one object of this volume is to carry these coined thoughts of standard value into a wide and permanent circulation."
