London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. "Do you expect me to talk? No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!" FLEMING, Ian. Goldfinger. London: Jonathan Cape, [1959]. First edition, first impression, first issue second state, Binding 'A'. Octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 188 x 127 mm.). 318 pp. Publisher's black cloth effect paper over boards, front cover with a blind-stamped skull and gilt coins in the eye sockets, spine lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. First impression, first issue, first state publisher's (unclipped) dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping. Binding very lightly 'cocked', small lower marginal stain between pp. 236 & 237, otherwise an excellent copy in a very good dust jacket, spine slightly darkened and a few very small closed edge tears. Goldfinger is the seventh novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape on 23 March 1959. Goldfinger originally bore the title The Richest Man in the World and was written in January and February 1958. The story centers on the investigation by MI6 operative James Bond into the gold smuggling activities of Auric Goldfinger, who is also suspected by MI6 of being connected to SMERSH, the Soviet counter-intelligence organization. As well as establishing the background to the smuggling operation, Bond uncovers a much larger plot, with Goldfinger planning to steal the gold reserves of the United States from Fort Knox. Gilbert, A7a.1.2.

Jonathan Cape, 1959]. Artwork measuring 406 x 508 mm. Matted within mountboard measuring 571 x 660 mm. In fine condition. Richard Chopping's personal, signed copy of the final proof sheet artwork, being the glorious full-sized image taken from the original painting, before the spine lettering and publisher's imprint were added (although the spine panel is still illustrated here). The image was then scaled down to produce the dust jackets. This item was originally sold in the 1980s by Richard Chopping himself. Richard Wasey Chopping (1917-2008) was a British illustrator and author, painting in the trompe l'oeil style to create a realistic and almost three-dimensional appearance. Among his illustrations are nine iconic covers for the James Bond books by Ian Fleming, published between 1957 and 1966, and the cover of John Gardner's first Bond continuation novel, Licence Renewed (1981). Chopping was born in Colchester, Essex and educated at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk. He lived in the historic village… Read More

Description:
London: Cape, 1959. A rare, final proof for the novel Goldfinger by Richard Chopping. The proof is believed to be one of fewer than ten copies and feature the iconic trompe l'oeil skull embedded with $20 gold coin eye sockets together with a rose stem beneath the skull's teeth and is signed in pencil by Richard Chopping (1917-2008), who designed a number of James Bond first edition book covers. The proof is lighter in colour to the final dust wrapper artwork finally used by Cape. The piece was commissioned by UK publisher Jonathan Cape and is custom-framed in a light oak satin-wood frame. "The Chopping jacket was a tremendous success, both in England and America, and from that day on he and I and Michael Howard of Cape's have devised all the James Bond jackets, which have now become something of a hallmark with the book trade and have earned prizes for Cape's." Ian Fleming (1964). Mr. Chopping felt so little warmth for Fleming that he sold his autographed copies of his… Read More
