The golliwog, golliwogg or golly is a black fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton that appears in children's books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. It was reproduced, both by commercial and hobby toy-makers as a children's toy called the "golliwog", and had great popularity in Europe and Australia into the 1970s.
The doll is characterized by black skin, eyes rimmed in white, clown lips and frizzy hair. Though home-made golliwogs were sometimes female, the golliwog was generally male. For this reason, in the period following World War II, the golliwog was seen, along with the teddy bear, as a suitable soft toy for a young boy. The image of the doll has become the subject of controversy. Its depiction of black people has been accused of being racist, along with pickaninnies, minstrels, mammy figures, and other caricatures. The golliwog has been described as "the least known of the major anti-Black caricatures in the United States". In recent years, changing political attitudes with regard to race have reduced the popularity and sales of golliwogs as toys. Manufacturers who have used golliwogs as a motif have either withdrawn them as an icon or changed the name. In particular, the association of the golliwog with the pejorative term "wog" has resulted in the use of alternative names such as "golly" and "golly doll".
Florence Kate Upton was born in 1873 in Flushing, New York, the daughter of English parents who had emigrated to the United States three years previously. Following the death of her father, she moved back to England with her mother and sisters when she was fourteen. There she spent several years drawing and developing her artistic skills. To afford tuition to art school, she illustrated a children's book entitled The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg. The 1895 book included a character named the Golliwogg, who was first described as "a horrid sight, the blackest gnome", but who quickly turned out to be a friendly character, and is later attributed with a "kind face." A product of the blackface minstrel tradition, the Golliwogg had jet black skin; bright red lips; and wild woolly hair. He wore red trousers, a shirt with a stiff collar, red bow-tie, and a blue jacket with tails -- all traditional minstrel attire.

The Golliwog The second Golliwog title from a turn-of-the-century picture book series, noted for its artistic design and the stylish black doll character who is considered controversial today. Born in 1873, Upton, returned to her native Great Britain and began work as an illustrator. Returning to the U.S., she and her mother made a book together which featured a set of peg dolls and the dramatic black doll, they named the golliwog. The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls (1895) became a great success and so were all the others in the series, which took the golliwog and his companions to all kinds of places around the world.

Description:
London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green & Co., 1896. Hardcover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Oblong 11 By 9 Inches. 63 pp. Full color plate illustrations not quite every other page, with text illustrations interspersed in margins of comic verse. One of the best of the politically dubious relics of late nineteenth century children's literature. It is hard to say whether the infectious humor of the illustrations or of the fluent inspired doggerel, almost certainly emulated by the likes of Roald Dahl, is the bigger draw. Probably the rarest of the highly desirable Golliwogg series, this one taking our characters to Paris, Japan and Africa. This copy has considerable soilage on the boards, which are illustrated paper pasted onto the boards. Shelfwear along edges and corners. Original spine band survives, with some wear by tips and rubbing along gutters. Interior tight. Some scattered soilage to pages, but text and especially the illustrations remain attractive.

London, New York, & Bombay: Longmans & Green, & Co, 1903. New Edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. Marvelous illustrations by Florence Kate Upton, (1873 - 1922) English illustrator and cartoonist known most for her series of children's books, the Golliwogg series. Upton first introduced the Golliwogg in her 1895 book 'Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg'. Her Golliwogg is a friendly and courageous character, although some later iterations were not. This is the story of the round the world travels of Golliwogg and his "old time friends", the Dutch peg dolls, on their home made bicycles. They travel to Paris and visit the Eiffel Tower; visit Japan and ride in a jinrikisha; travel to Turkey, ride a camel in a desert, and are captured by a tribe of cannibals. Oblong 4to, 62pp, color illustrations. Quarter cloth and pictorial boards, with title in red and black at front board, no title at spine. Boards a bit dusty, part of titlle smudged, inner hinge starting, but holding firm.

London, New York, & Bombay, Longmans, Green, & Co., 1896. . First edition; landscape 4to (220 x 280 mm.); pictorial title, 31 coloured full-page illustrations and monotone illustrations by Florence K. Upton, patterned endpapers, attractive coeval gift inscription to front pastedown, slight offsetting to title and verso of last leaf, overall internally near-fine; publisher's cloth-backed pictorial boards, a few minor scratches and slight rubbing to extremities, a very good copy. A very good example of this popular title from the Uptons' Golliwogg series of thirteen books; one of the best in terms of subject matter and the variety & scope of the Florence K. Upton's splendid illustrations, in our opinion at least.
